Accountability August: Tell Congress What the Megabill Means at Home
Congress will soon head home for August recess, just weeks after Republicans approved a megabill that takes health care and meals from millions to funnel tax giveaways to the ultra-wealthy. Recess gives us an opportunity to tell our elected representatives what this means for our communities and advocate for the policies we need to thrive. We’ll give you the tools to make the most of this opportunity, including a new toolkit "They Work for YOU: A People's Guide to Getting Help from the Hill”

Recession for Us, Riches for Them? Stopping Republicans’ Corporate Giveaway with Words that Work
May 15, 2025
-
The Trump Administration’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) is masquerading as a cost-cutting project that, in reality, boosts billionaires’ profits at our expense. This phenomenon shows up explicitly at the Pentagon, which continues to reap budget boosts while failing repeated audits, sinking taxpayer dollars into wasteful weapons, and boosting the bottom line for corporate profiteers like Space X. At the same time, DOGE and Congress have put human needs like health care and education on the chopping block.
Our briefing with Savannah Wooten from Public Citizen, Lindsay Koshgarian from the Institute for Policy Studies, and Naveed Shah from Common Defense explores how DOGE is using “efficiency” as a cover to slash programs we rely on, while boosting the profits of billionaires.
Zombie Law: The Comstock Act and the Future of Health and Rights
October 10, 2024
-
A 150 year old law is back from the dead and threatening our health and freedom. Join special guest Rep. Becca Balint (VT at large), Jodi Jacobson, Executive Director, Healthcare Across Borders, Sarah Lipton-Lubet, Executive Director, Take Back the Court Action Fund, Nicole Regalado, Vice President of Campaigns, UltraViolet and Pamela Merritt, Executive Director, Medical Student for Choice for a discussion on how anti-abortion extremists are planning to twist the Comstock Act to try to ban abortion nationwide, even in states where abortion remains legal. Advocates are urging Congress to act decisively to repeal this 1873 law dating from when women couldn’t even vote. This law threatens not just reproductive rights, but the entire fabric of public health in the United States.

As a new - and deeply divided - Congress begins, how can members of Congress fight to protect our rights when passing helpful legislation seems unlikely? From hearings to letters to direct action, this event delves into the tools members of Congress can use to create change beyond passing legislation. Over the next two years, members of Congress will need every tool at their disposal to protect our rights, hold corporations accountable and make a difference for our communities. Join us as progressive champions, advocates, and organizers share their experiences leveraging Congress’s oversight capabilities to put people first. It builds on our recent explainer, "Beyond Bills: Understanding the Tools in Congress' Toolbox,” and delves deeper into the many tools members of Congress can use to affect change without passing legislation.
